Our approach

Responsible investment combines Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) considerations and stewardship efforts, ensuring that we consider all financial and sustainability-related factors that may affect investment outcomes.

Why does ESG matter?

ESG factors help assess companies using important measures beyond traditional accounting metrics, giving a fuller view of an investment’s performance.

ESG factors can play a role in shaping a company’s long-term prospects; issues such as climate change or labour standards, if not properly managed, may increase business risks and uncertainty. By considering ESG alongside traditional financial analysis, we aim to better understand these risks and support long-term investment outcomes.

ESG in our portfolios

By integrating Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) considerations into our investment decisions and stewardship, we aim to manage risks, identify opportunities and help build a more resilient financial system for our clients.

In 2022, atomos formed a strategic alliance with WTW, a global leader in sustainable investing. Through this partnership, our portfolios benefit from sustainable investing insights, climate research, and active stewardship to support our investment decisions.

Stewardship & engagement

Stewardship is about active ownership. While company boards are responsible for oversight, investors are not simply passive holders of shares. Through activities such as voting at shareholder meetings and engaging constructively where appropriate, investors can raise concerns and encourage improvements. This view is supported by a body of academic research showing that stewardship can be an effective mechanism for managing ESG-related risks, such as lowering carbon emissions (1).

Strong stewardship helps to:

  • Protect investments from risks linked to poor environmental, social, or governance (ESG) practices
  • Strengthen trust between companies and their shareholders
  • Support long-term, sustainable value creation

Stewardship in practice

Where funds in our portfolios are advised by WTW, we draw on the expertise of EOS at Federated Hermes, accessed via WTW, to support this work. EOS is a leading global provider of engagement services, representing investors with over £1.7 trillion in assets.

In 2025, EOS:

  • Held discussions with 994 companies
  • Addressed more than 4,000 engagement topics, including climate strategy, supply chain standards, and board effectiveness
